[i]cherdt posting in [i]webdev: Recommendations for link checking software

I'm seeking recommendations for link checking software. A client I'm working with is currently using Parasoft's WebKing, a robust testing suite that is complete overkill for checking links.

I like the W3C's LinkChecker, but it doesn't keep a cache of which pages it has already checked, and would end up checking the same links 1000 times over.

I'm looking for something that checks links to both internal and external pages.

Thanks!

Book 12
Author and Title of Book: Lies (And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them) A Fair and Balanced Look At the Right by Al Fanken
Rating: 10/10
Date Began: April 30th
Date Finished: May 12th
379 pages

Good book if you haven't read it yet go do so. Al Franken does his homework unlike most talked about in this book. It may offend some, hell it might even piss them off. If you have a since of humor and some what aware of of the past few years you'll enjoy this book.

[i]astrobenji posting in [i]webdev: CSS help

G'day everyone,
I'm really hoping someone can give me a hand with some CSS. I'm relatively new to full CSS layouts and I've come close to exploding my brain with this trouble I'm having.

I've been working on a Joomla based gaming blog. 95% of the design is CSS, using div tags (with the exception of the tables that Joomla drops in) to position everything. Everything seems to be working well, with the exception of a few pages.

Firstly, if you have a look at this page here. Everything looks hunky dory, and is displaying as it should.

However, move over to this page here and you'll see that things go a little wonky.

You'll notice that the divs I've got down the right hand side run over the footer. Looks like the footer isn't actually clearing the divs that I have floated on the right. Now I suspect it has something to do with the amount of content - ie, the first page (Mass Effect) that looks good, has enough content to push the footer well past the other divs.

Both pages are running off the same HTML and CSS templates. I really hope someone can help me with this - I've worked so bloody hard and I've only got a few bugs and kinks to iron out before I can start promoting the site.

Thanks in advance.
P.S. I will gladly post both the HTML and CSS here if some one requires them.

[i]srain: N and A - May 9th 2008

I had a fantastic time shooting a reception at the Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul, MN this past weekend. The couple had already been married in Las Vegas in March so everyone was all set to party! The caves were a really fantastic back drop to the event and the tour of the caves were so much fun. I've uploaded some of the images to my website, the images to this wedding start here in the wedding gallery. I've put the images behind the cut as well!

[i]iron_raptor: *sigh* Another great game ruined by SecuROM

I just got an e-mail from a Maxis representative.

Hi IR,

To answer your authentication question, we are still using the SecuROM.
Many of the products at EA have been using this product and Spore will
also.

[i]iron_raptor: Mass Effect: The Commie's Return

So reading on the Bioware forums, I noticed something interesting.

In the Russian sector, the localization markets have agreed with E.A. to remove on-line registration and 3-activation minimum because of the heavy presence of piracy, and the lack of internet.

Can we say... Irony?

BTW, to those who think SecuROM isn't an issue... look what's planned for SecuROM 7

# Disc Based DRM Features
Per default SecuROM™ checks for an original disc during every startup of an application. Feel free to customize your protection by selecting either (1) the one time only disc check or (2) periodic disc checks (every certain number of launches or days).

# Time Based DRM Features
Define the start date and/or end date of your application. Depending on your product requirements, time based DRM features can checked either online (more secure) or offline (more convenient).

# Usage Based DRM Features
SecuROM™ allows you to limit the functionality. Simply define the number of launches or days after executing the protected application the first time.

And regarding procut activation.

With SecuROM™ ‘s Product Activation concept, Sony DADC offers software publishers the possibility to secure their content either distributed via the physical or electronic sales channel with one solution. Only legitimate customers who have purchased the product are able to unlock the program which is bound to the hardware after activation. This ensures that once activated, it cannot be transferred to another PC and therefore not being mass pirated. SecuROM™ ‘s Product Activation can be easily combined with Sony DADC’s n-CD solution. Let your end-customers register first and collect important market information prior allowing them to use your software products. See www.n-cd.com for more information.

I call this "Hardware fingerprinting".

[i]tiff_seattle posting in [i]astronomy: Sitting in that sunbeam on that little blue dot.

In the Pale Blue Dot image taken by Voyager 1, we see the Earth in what is described as "a beam of scattered sunlight". Can someone explain to me what is happening here, and why the beam of light appears in the photograph? Shouldn't the light be radiating in all directions equally from the Sun? Is this just some artifact due to the location of Voyager when this picture was taken? I have searched online, but have not been able to find an explanation for this. Help me find the answer to this, astronomyastronomy! Thanks.

[i]artemis2020 posting in [i]webdev: themes

Hi,

I have a web page with a theme and a skin created using ASP.net.

Once a button is clicked, I would like the theme's settings to change, but I'm not sure how to do this.

Is it possible to have theme settings inside an OnClick? Or would I somehow have to link to the Web.config file through the onClick to make the change?

Thanks

[i]simbab posting in [i]debian: Pidgin 2.4.x on Etch?

I have a friend whom I am supporting on Etch (I myself run Sid). I build a few programs for him as they are updated, Wine being the major one. Wine hasn't been a problem, it's a matter of firing up QEMU and compiling the packages from Unstable. Pidgin however, is throwing obscure linker errors when I try to compile it. I don't have the error readily available to me, so I decided I'd just ask here if anyone knows if it's possible to compile Pidgin 2.4.x using the toolchain and libraries in Etch (they have 2.3.1 at backports.org) or if I should just give up. If it's worth my time, though, I can post the output here and pursue it from there.

Thanks!

[i]iron_raptor: Bravo Will Wright, Bravo.

The last bit of his TED 2007 Spore demo speech just touched me very much.

"Basicaly the reason why I make toys like this (Spore), is because, I think if there's one difference I can possibly make in the world, and I would choose to make, is that I would like to somehow give people a little bit better calibration on long-term thinking. Because I think most of the problems in our world that's faced right now is the result of short-term thinking and the fact that it's so hard for us to think 50 years, a hundred years, or a thousand years out. And I think by giving toys like this, and by letting them replay dynamics, very long-term dynamics over the short term and getting some sense of what we're doing now, what it's going to be like in 100 years, I think is probably the most effective thing I can be doing to change the world, and that's why I think, personally, that toys can change the world."

I wold so love to be a part of Maxis.. under Will Wright's guidance... games that change the world... wow.

[i]luminairex posting in [i]webdev: PHP and Perl sessions

Is it possible for PHP and Perl to share session data? I have a web application written in PHP that sends POST data via Ajax to a Perl script, but for security reasons, the Perl script shouldn't handle the data if the user is not logged into their account. If I can't share session data directly, is there something I can do within the database (a new table or something) that would indicate to both languages that the user has authenticated to my site?

[i]gafennec: Christmas in May.

Lawyer dude dropped off an unneeded 21 inch monitor (ViewSonic Professional Series P810) and a new 4.1 surround sound speaker set. The monitor is HUGE and heavy!! But you can't beat a price of free with a stick. I also retrieved my wayward copy of Harry Potter 7 and was going to reread it, but I received two books to review. And just for no reason at all other than we wanted too; Mike made a cherry chip cake with cherry frosting. Yummy. I still prefer Cream Cheese frosting, but this is good too. Naturally I'm going to bore you with pictures.
